When we work out we are actually breaking down our muscles, which is why during a work out we actually start feeling weaker than when we started. How quickly our muscles degrade depends on how fit we are to begin with.
After a work out, our muscles need time to rebuild and rest by replacing elements lost, both proteins and energy stores. Your muscles will actually get smaller if they are not given enough recovery time to make repairs. This could mean a decline in lean muscle mass and a lowering of your metabolism. The more muscles you have and the larger they are, the faster your metabolism.
To keep your muscles healthy and give them the proper fuel and recovery time, follow a few simple rules:
Do not eat less than 1200 calories per day.
Eat a small amount of high quality protein at each meal.
Get plenty of sleep - Try to rest a day between work outs.
And if new to exercising, try to work out every other day rather than two days in a row.
What should I eat to help recover from my workout?
Based on a study done on rats at the University of Illinois, muscles have a quicker recovery when we eat foods that contain a branch-chained amino acid called leucine which can be found in foods such as meats and dairy products as well as protein bars and some sports drinks.
"Leucine appears to have a specific, and apparently unique, impact on skeletal muscle," said Donald K. Layman, a professor of nutrition. "It stimulates muscle protein synthesis, provides fuel for the muscle and helps to maintain blood glucose. What really surprised us was that its activity is not seen when leucine or protein is consumed before or during exercise. It has a significant impact on protein synthesis during the recovery time after exercise."
Right after your work out, eat a small snack containing fresh fruits and a small amount of protein. The natural sugars in the fruits helps to quickly replace depleted muscle glycogen stores and the protein speeds up the intake of the sugar into your system. Make sure the protein is a small portion in this meal, making up only about 25% or less of the total carbohydrate grams. The easier it is to digest, the better it works, so try a medium firm tofu which also helps restore calcium and magnesium which you body has also lost.

Chocolate Recovery Pudding
1/4 lb. medium firm tofu (for protein, calcium)
1 banana* (for electrolytes)
1/2 pear* (for natural sugar)
1/2 T. hemp oil (for essential fatty acids, omega 3 + omega 6)

Blend all ingredients together until reaching a consistent texture. I recommend a food processor.
The pudding will be sweeter by using very ripe fruit.

amacorp.com Scars and stretch marks are all very different and delicate to treat. We customize each individual scar and stretch mark removal treatment for every patient. Scars and stretch marks are typically treated with three different lasers in each session. First, every scar or stretch mark is individually targeted. Next, we do an overall color blending of the scar area ("painting"), causing the "turn-over" of your base-line melanin (old melanin is replaced with new) which evens out your coloration. Thirdly, to fill in the scar from the inside out, we will stimulate the production of collagen with an intense collagen treatment. This targets old deteriorated collagen deep in the dermis in order to accelerate its removal by your body's own natural processes. We will also target fibroblast cells throughout your dermis, stimulating them to produce amplified quantities of new young collagen. The last portion of the scar and stretch mark removal treatment will smooth out the surface of your scar with an epidermal resurfacing (laser peel). This phase removes a few microns (30-50%) of the epidermis (the dead cells on the top layer of your skin), along with its imperfections, discolorations, fine wrinkles and roughness. Scar and stretch mark removal usually will take approximately 4-6 treatments in 3-4 week intervals. Foot Care for Senior Citizens
By · CommentsGood foot health is especially important for senior citizens. The longer your feet stay healthy, the longer you can maintain an active lifestyle. Simply follow these 5 guidelines put forth by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) and the Institute for Preventative Foot Health (IPFH):
Principle One: Proper Foot Hygiene. Simple daily routines can go a long way when it comes to promoting foot health among senior citizens. Feet should be washed daily, taking special care to wash between the toes. Just as important as daily washing is making sure that the feet are dried thoroughly. Damp feet in shoes can lead to infections such as fungal toenails and Athlete’s foot. Footwear should also be kept clean and dry. Rotate footwear regularly, and purchase shoes with removable insoles – a feature that makes it easier to thoroughly dry shoes overnight.
Principle Two: Regular Foot Inspections. If left untreated, small cuts and sore spots on the feet can lead to more serious infections. Foot ulcers (open wounds on the feet) are common among senior citizens who fail to notice minor foot injuries early on. Reduced nervous sensation and circulation in the feet mean that the feet will need to be inspected visually. A family member or friend may need to help out if there are problems with eyesight or flexibility.
Principle Three: Proper Nail Care. Failure to trim nails properly can lead to ingrown toenails and various infections. Toenails should be cut straight across to prevent the corners of the nail from growing into the skin. File away any sharp edges. If a toenail does become ingrown or infected, see a doctor who can care for it properly. This is especially true from senior citizens with diabetes or anyone who is particularly vulnerable to infections on their feet. Discolored or abnormally thick toenails may be a sign of a fungal infection. If the discoloration or tenderness persists, speak to your doctor.
Principle Four: Foot Care for Diabetics. Senior citizens with diabetes must be particularly vigilant when it comes to the care of their feet. Daily foot inspections are crucial, and your doctor should also inspect your feet on a regular basis. Invest in a pair of orthopedic shoes. Avoid going barefoot or soaking your feet in hot water.
Principle Five: Proper Footwear. Supportive footwear is especially important when it comes to preserving good foot health. Look for shoes that protect and support your feet. Orthopedic walking shoes often provide a good combination of comfort and support. Avoid shoes with narrow toes or little arch support. Make sure your shoes fit you properly and can accommodate the socks you usually wear.
Dog Bathing and Grooming Without Stress
By · CommentsBath time for your dog can be traumatic for you and for him, if you are not prepared and organized. Bathing is essential if you want your dog to avoid dermatological problems, have a pleasant smell and look good. It is best to loosen the tangles so use a brush to comb the coat and remove the dead hair, dirt in the tangles and sometimes sediments that get embedded inside the coat.
Make sure that you have a brush, shampoo, conditioner, rubber bath mat, water sprayer or large jug, soft brush and towels in the bathroom and run the bath. After this find look for pet. Don't forget anything because if you place the dog in the bath and have to leave him to go and look for something he will almost certainly jump out and shake water everywhere. Before placing the dog in the bath brush his coat to get rid of any excess fur, knots or dirty deposits
If your dog doesn't like water or bathing it may be necessary to hold him on a leash. Dress in suitable clothes because you will get very wet during this process, you could even consider beach wear or a plastic apron. If you place all of your cleaning items close to you will narrow the odds of the dog escaping during the bathing process.
Most pet owners have experienced having to clean a dog that has managed to cover itself in something that smells foul and there is nothing worse than skunk spray. There are a number of products which can be purchased at pet stores to counteract the smell and clean the dog but there are also some home remedies which work in varying degrees such as tomato juice and reconstituted Masengill. The following recipe also works but has to be used immediately (it won't keep):-
1 pint hydrogen peroxide
2/3 cup baking soda
1 tablespoon liquid, citrus based soap
Mix these ingredients together and sponge the dog down. Leave this on the dog's coat for between two and five minutes and then rinse off with clean water. This remedy oxidizes the odor but will not work if the mix is not fresh.
If you dog has white fur it is possible that the coat will become temporarily discolored, normally pink or orange.
Regularly clean your dog's eyes, ears and teeth not only to keep the dog healthy but also to save on vet's bills. Monthly grooming is recommended and your dog's first aid and cleaning kit should include at least the following:-
-> Balls of Cotton
-> Dog eye drops
-> Tear stain remover if necessary
-> Ear powder
-> Toothbrush and dog toothpaste
-> 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and baking soda
-> Dog shampoo and conditioner
There are many other perfumes and sprays that are available if you want to indulge your dog that can be enjoyed by the pet and the owner. A fresh smelling dog in the house can be especially good if you have kids in the house.
